The Friday Challenge - 7/08/10

This Week in THE FRIDAY CHALLENGE
Kersley Fitzgerald explores ideas writers and agents have for pushing the bounds of your experience, how editing can be similar to painting a house, and ways to break out of your writer mindset. Join the discussion...

Bruce Bethke
challenges us to live up to the ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence. Join the discussion...

Henry Vogel spends a bunch of words discussing his big, geeky summer while also delving into recent movies, graphic novels, and novels. Join the discussion...

Ultimate Geek Fu discovers the hitherto unknown link between Velveeta and the movie Independence Day. Join the discussion...

Also, Fitz of Distraction explains why it's a good idea to have a writing buddy , M takes the win in the 6/25/10 Friday Challenge, "Folk Tales of the Electronic Frontier," the artist Prince tells us the internet is completely over, and the inmates discuss the view from their respective locations in the asylum. All this and more, this week in THE FRIDAY CHALLENGE.

Now for this week's Friday Challenge:

"Road Trip"
We have the following entries for "Road Trip," the 7/02/10 lesser Friday Challenge:

Ellen, "The Way It Used to Be"

Miko, "Night Tripping"

Tom, "Road Trip Friday Challenge"

Al, "Road Trip to Heck"

Arvid, "The 6023 Kilometer Trek"

Please welcome newcomer Ellen and welcome back, Tom and Al, long-time contributors who haven't entered recently. Miko, we don't want you to feel left out, so know that you're welcome, too. Arvid forgot to post his entry here on the FC but was saved by his mother, who alerted me to his entry. Has any other Friday Challenge entry been submitted by the author's mother? This could be a Friday Challenge first!

If we've missed any entries, or if anyone has snowdogged in an entry after the deadline, please let us know so we can fix this list. As always, even if you haven't posted an entry this week—even if you never enter in any week—you are invited to read, comment on, and vote for your favorites. Don't be shy about leaving feedback on the writer's sites, either. Writers thrive on knowing that somewhere out there, someone is actually reading the words that they have written. The winner will be announced Sunday evening.

And now for our next Friday Challenge:

"The Dilbert Days of Summer"

Many of us here at the FC work in IT, but you don't have to work in IT to work with idiots. I'm sure we've all had moments at work when we thought, "Gee, this situation would make a great Dilbert comic!"

Maybe someone suggested you save space on your hard drive by saving all your documents in the smallest font possible or maybe the person you told to "clean their hard drive" was later found with a cracked open hard drive, some Formula 401, and a rag, polishing away at the surface of the drive. Maybe your story involves co-workers or managers. Maybe your story involves customers. Maybe your story is entirely fictional. Whatever your story, the challenge this week is to write it for all of us to enjoy.

As always, we're playing by the loosely enforced and rarely updated Official Rules of THE FRIDAY CHALLENGE, and playing for whatever is behind Door #3. The deadline for this one is midnight Central time, Thursday, July 15.
