Ultimate Geek Fu

Eight or nine years ago, we loaded up the car and set off on the five hour drive to visit my parents in South Carolina. With his portable TV slung between the two front seats, the Boy had clamped on his headphones and was watching a video before we left the neighborhood. Five minutes later, we turned onto the entrance ramp for the interstate, where we would spend most of the next five hours. The Boy looked and pulled off his headphones.

"Are we there yet?" he asked.

Thus we began a road trip during which that same question was asked at least half a dozen times. And this brings us around to road trip movies.

Why are there so many movies about the horrors of family vacations? Probably because most members of the audience can relate to the horrors of the family vacation; parents from the annoying questions from their children, children from the boring drive that goes on and on and on. Among those movies are some true classics; Chevy Chase chasing after Christie Brinkley in National Lampoon's Vacation, John Candy and Dan Ackroyd in The Great Outdoors, or Bill Murray in Meatballs.

These are the movies that make us think about spending our vacation time sitting at home, catching up on TV shows or movies you missed when they were in theater.

So, what's your favorite vacation movie? And how much does it remind you of a vacation you actually took?

Let the arguments begin!
