The Friday Challenge - 10/8/2010

This week in THE FRIDAY CHALLENGE

Ultimate Geek Fu proposes the idea that The Watchman movie not only wasn't good, but that it actively sucked. What comic book based movies did you think were even worse? Share your ideas...

Critical Thinking Bruce stands in for Kersley, discusses morons in the publishing industry and introduces us to the word "authorprenuer." Join the discussion...

Ruminations of an Old Goat tells how the Old Goat discovered Lois McMaster Bujold, speculates why Miles Vorkosigan is such a popular character, and makes sure everyone knows when they can buy Bujold's latest novel in bookstores. Join the discussion...

Splattering Guts for Fun and Profit explains the joy of maps and why some areas on our maps have lots of really straight lines. Join the discussion...

Also, M is the winner in the "Read Me a Story" challenge, and the inmates discuss the view from their respective places in the asylum. All this and more, this week in THE FRIDAY CHALLENGE.

And now for the entries in the latest Friday Challenges.

"Before and After"

Turning now to the 10/1/10 lesser Friday Challenge, "Before and After," as of the deadline we have received the following entries (there are a lot of them, but they're really short):

Miko, "It Happened One Night of the Living Dead"

Ben-El, "Nightmare on Wall Street," "A Midsummer's Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Return of the Lion King"

Triton, A quintet of entries

Avery, A trio of entries

M, A really long title combining vast numbers of books and movies and God-knows-what plus another entry

Waterboy, A bunch more entries

Arvid Macenion, "There is a Bridge to Terabithia" (drop.io, password "challenge")
Info on Bridge to Terabithia, if you haven't read it, is here.

Carmine Vrill, "28 days Later with Greg Kinnear" (drop.io)

If we've missed any entries, or if anyone has snowdogged in an entry after the deadline, please let us know so we can fix this list. As always, even if you haven't posted an entry this week—even if you never enter in any week—you are invited to read, comment on, and vote for your favorites. Don't be shy about leaving feedback on the writer's sites, either. Writers thrive on knowing that somewhere out there, someone is actually reading the words that they have written. The winner will be announced Sunday evening.

"Writing the Winner"

Next up, the 9/24/10 lesser Friday Challenge, "Writing the Winner," as of the deadline we have received the following entries:

[Sound of crickets chirping]

If we missed any entries, please alert us as soon as possible.

I guess most of our Challengers just don't know enough about Pacific history to make a go of this one. Sorry about that, Watkinson!

So, how about a new challenge?

"Save the Words! Write a Story"

Watkinson forwarded this site to Bruce, who shared it with the rest of us judges. This is a simple challenge. First, go to the site Save the Words. Take your time and enjoy the clever design. Eventually, though, you need to pick a word, adopt it, and prepare to save the word. Save the word by using it in the title of your story and in your story. Imagine, not only do you get to write a story but you also get to perform a humanitarian gesture by helping to save an endangered word! What more could a writer ask for?

As always, we're playing by the loosely enforced Official Rules of the Friday Challenge, and playing for whatever is behind Door #3. This is a lesser challenge so the deadline for this one is midnight central time, Thursday, October 14.
