Sorry, folks. We've been off on a chronological spelunking expedition that ended up being far more complicated and going on for far longer than we'd planned, and consequently I was unable to get back into town in time to finish and post the column originally planned for today. Mucho gracias to Henry for working from a series of cryptic email messages and holding down the fort as I struggled to find viable wi-fi hotspots along the road.
In lieu of a column today, then, I would instead like to direct your attention to this piece published in today's Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, by historian and old family friend (so if you choose to comment on his article, be nice to him) John Gurda:
We all come from somewhere. We all have formative experiences that instill in us a lifetime of biases, conceits, and preconceptions. This is the system that produced me and formed mine. If you want to understand how I think and why I hold the views I do, it helps to know something of my background. When I start fuming and screaming about the abysmal failures and stupid tragedies of socialism, it is not a complaint rooted in the abstract. I have lived them, first-hand.
Back to business as usual next week.
Ciao,
