The Friday Challenge - 10/1/10

Ultimate Geek Fu dares to propose the unthinkable -- remaking Star Wars! Who would you cast as Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia Organa? What scene would you completely rewrite? Share your ideas...

Critical Thinking discusses National Banned Book week and touches off some serious discussion. Join the discussion...

Ruminations of an Old Goat discusses a good Microsoft application, touches on politics, then enters the realm of video games and video game ratings. That's where the fun begins. Join the discussion...

Also, Fitz of Distraction gives another example of how hard it is to write with a hyperactive child in the house, Watkinson is the win of the "Just one tiny, practically insignificant change" challenge, the judges have not yet named a winner in the "Read Me a Story" challenge (thought they're getting close), and the inmates discuss the view from their respective places in the asylum. All this and more, this week in THE FRIDAY CHALLENGE.

No Friday Challenges are due today, so let's move on to the new lesser challenge.

"Before and After"

Anyone who watches the TV game show Jeopardy, the only game show that doesn't make me wonder where they find the idiot contestants, knows a popular category is "Before and After." In this category, the response is always the combination of two things for which one ends with the same word the other begins. An example of such a response might be "Robert the Bruce Bethke," just to select an entirely random example. Bruce has proposed a Friday Challenge that is similar to the Jeopardy category.

Select two novels, movies, short stories, or any combination of those. Combine the titles and sketch out the resulting story. Bruce offered an example in the Ultimate Geek Fu discussion: "A Star Wars is Born, in which Luke Skywalker, a poor country farm boy who dreams of someday singing and dancing on the stage at the Mos Eisley Cantina. But then one fateful day..."

We're not asking you to write an entire story, just give us the overview. Of course, if your muse compels you to write a full story, go for it. Now get going, find your two sources of inspiration, and start writing!

As always, we're playing by the loosely enforced Official Rules of the Friday Challenge, and playing for whatever is behind Door #3. This is a major challenge so the deadline for this one is midnight central time, Thursday, October 7.
